Street Soundscape

A creative methodology to explore a neighbourhood through music

For the second edition of Carta Infinita, a creative mapping residency programme, The Street Society developed with photographer Chris Saunders an original concept : exploring a neighborhood through its people’s playlist. Our team went to meet passers-by of the 10th arrondissement, taking as a starting point the art gallery The Window, focal point of the week-long residency.

Diversity of profiles, headphones, telephones, platforms, musical genres: the cultural diversity of the neighbourhood is expressed in the playlist that we made on Spotify from the tracks indicated by the passers-by interviewed. From Jamaican reggae to Haitian gospel, from K-Pop to King of Pop, from Congolese R&B to English rock, we embarked on a musical world tour within the limits of the 10th arrondissement.

Each passer-by agreed to remove their headphones and share with us the name of the song being played. These discussions were an opportunity to evoke the real or imaginary places linked to the track, and the impact of its listening on the perception of the current space. We created a zine compiling portraits and quotes of the passers-by along with the lyrics of the song they were listening to.

We then invited these people to the opening of the exhibition at The Window Gallery (75010) where the neighbourhood playlist was broadcasted around a micro-dancefloor and an exhibition of the zine
